MED-EL Southern Africa & University of Cape Town Division of Otorhinolaryngology fellowship program
Dr Tashneem Harris, a leading otologist and neurotologist, is overseeing the fellowship, supported by MED-EL Southern Africa as part of its focus on social responsibility to address challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa relating to access to ear and hearing care. It is the only otology fellowship in Africa and is training subspecialists in advanced otology, cochlear implant and lateral skull base surgery so that they can establish centres of excellence in their own countries and can in turn train others what they have learned.
The fellowship is modelled on the Head and Neck Surgery Fellowship run by Prof. Johan Fagan at the University of Cape Town, which is currently training its 16th African fellow and has made an important impact on head and neck services and training in Africa. The otology fellowship similarly presents an opportunity to improve access to ear and hearing care by focusing on education and training. MED-EL Southern Africa wants to be part of the solution by funding the Otology Fellowship as they realize the great unmet need for hearing and ear care in Africa and for ENT surgeons to acquire the required skills to perform life-changing surgeries.
MED-EL recognizes the passion and dedication of the fellows who will be supported during their year away from their families to undergo the 12-month Fellowship training.
The opportunity to be trained by Dr Tashneem Harris at Groote Schuur Hospital will not only reward the fellows for their commitment, but also make them part of a wonderful network of colleagues and trainees, past and present, all over Africa.
